The 3-Layer System is Dead. Here's What Actually Works.

For decades, the standard advice has been "Base, Mid, Shell." While mathematically sound in a catalog, the reality of high-output movement in sub-zero temperatures makes this rigid system a liability.

When you are ascending 1000m with a 65L pack, you will sweat, even at -15°C. If your shell isn't breathable enough, that sweat freezes. We advocate for an active/static approach.

Active Layering

While moving, prioritize extreme breathability over wind resistance. Use a grid-fleece over a synthetic wicking base. If wind is severe, add a highly permeable softshell. Leave the Gore-Tex in your pack.

Static Layering

The moment you stop moving—to belay, set up camp, or rest—your core temp will plummet. Immediately deploy an oversized synthetic belay parka over your active layers. Do not strip down to put it on.

Why Your Waterproof Boots Are Failing.

We see it every season. A customer returns a pair of premium Gore-Tex boots claiming they "leak." 95% of the time, the membrane is intact. The problem is maintenance.

Gore-Tex relies on a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the outer fabric. When this coating wears off, the outer fabric "wets out" (saturates). This creates a cold, wet barrier that stops the Gore-Tex membrane from breathing. The moisture you feel inside is your own sweat, trapped.

  • Step 1: Clean the mud off with a stiff brush and water. Mud acts like sandpaper on DWR.
  • Step 2: Re-apply a quality DWR spray while the boots are damp.
  • Step 3: Never dry boots near a direct heat source. It warps the sole and delaminates the membrane.
